Crazy Horse Monument: Crazy Horse, SD

After Jewel Cave, we were driving by Crazy Horse Monument.
We decided, okay I decided, that we should stop there.
In the Welcome Center, you start by watching an introductory movie.  It was really interesting and gave a lot of background on the artist and the monument.  The campus has many museum and collection areas to explore.  They have a Junior Scout program for kids that is similar to Junior Rangers.  Maddie and Max earned a certificate and some prizes.

The white sculpture is what the Crazy Horse Memorial will look like when it is complete.  The model is 1/34th scale.  The wood carving is of Crazy Horse, designed through "word pictures" because there are no known photographs of him.

Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear officially started Crazy Horse Memorial June 3, 1948. The Memorial's mission is to honor the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians.  It is the world's largest mountain carving.  The head alone is bigger than the entire Mount Rushmore monument.  When completed the Crazy Horse mountain carving will be 641 feet long by 563 feet high. Crazy Horse's completed head is 87 feet 6 inches high. The horse's head, currently the focus of work on the mountain, is 219 feet or 22 stories high. Ziolkowski worked and trained at Mount Rushmore under Victor Borglum.

Know Before You Go:   The entrance fee was kind of expensive.  $25 for our car.  This did not make Todd happy.  I think it is worthwhile if you are not tired and rushed.  Don't miss the introductory movie.  It gives a great perspective and background for what you are seeing there.
