Wildlife Loop Road: Custer State Park

We drove the Wildlife Loop Road to see the abundant animal life in Custer State Park. It was like going on an American Safari.   Maddie and Max had their binoculars out the entire time.  I asked Max to be an animal spotter for his side of the road.  He replied,
"Sure I can.  I won't let you down, Mom."

Custer's herd of 1500 bison roams freely throughout the park.  We were so excited to see these huge herds at first, but were almost bored of buffalo by the time we left South Dakota.
Pronghorn Antelope
Bighorn Sheep
Mountain Goats

The Begging Burros!
My favorite sighting.  They had traffic stopped and were sticking their heads in every car to beg for food.

Hee Haw!

Know Before You Go:  Bring plenty of cold water bottles, snacks and some sliced apples for the burros.  The drive is 18 miles of beautiful scenic road.  Add in picture stops and the roads being blocked by other cars and sometimes animals, and this drive can take a few hours.
