Mitchell Corn Palace: Mitchell, SD

We did a drive by of the Mitchell Corn Palace as we left Sioux Falls on our way to Wall.
It was drizzling and still a little too early in the morning, so the Palace was closed and I took lousy pictures of it.  I'm glad Todd let us stop by to see it even if we did not get to go inside.  I liked seeing the building covered in corn with all the birds nibbling at the designs!
Each year the exterior panels of the Corn Palace are decorated with locally grown corn.  The process usually starts in the spring and is completed by the end of September.  A different theme is chosen each year, and murals are designed to reflect that theme. "America's Destinations" is the theme for 2008-2009. There are panels depicting Washington D.C., the Statue of Liberty, the Space Needle in Seattle, the Golden Gate Bridge, the St. Louis Arch, the Alamo and Davy Crockett, Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, the Kennedy Space Center and South Dakota’s great Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument and the Corn Palace.
We saw a lot of the bare spaces on the facade. I was wondering what was going on, and I found out that we had witnessed some of the annual redecorating process. It began on Monday, June 8 as decorators started removing the dock and rye and began replacing those items. The Corn Mural will remain intact until the annual Corn Palace Festival at which time the new mural drawings will be placed on the Corn Palace. The new theme and murals should be completed about mid-October.

Know Before You Go:  The Corn Palace opens at 8 AM.  We were there too early, but I would have liked to go inside to see the exhibit that shows the different themes and panels from throughout the years.  In the summer months, they give guided tours.
