Right off of Highway 101 in Fortuna, Chapman's Gem and Mineral Shop is more than worth the stop. It is a huge warehouse full of all kinds of fossils, rocks, gems and minerals.
They have a museum off to one side that has a great display of agate and petrified wood slabs that Maddie really enjoyed.
We met the grandson of Chapman who is just a little older than Madeline. He showed us the statue of his grandfather and some of his favorite things, like the rocks that look like food. Steak, baked potato and broccoli anyone?

Know Before You Go: The museum is free. You can buy geodes in the shop and have them slice them open for you.
