Golden Spike National Historic Site: Brigham City, UT

Golden Spike National Historic Site is where the Union and Central Pacific Railroads joined their rails at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869, creating the nation's first transcontinental railroad.  The Visitor's Center has two movies playing on a loop.  One on the history of the railroads, and a Peanuts version in which Snoopy finally drives in the golden spike.  The kids preferred Snoopy.  We love Snoopy at our house.

At certain times throughout the day, there is a steam engine demonstration which was pretty neat.  On Saturdays, they have reenactments of the Last Spike Ceremony.
That would have been cool to see.

The kids barely finished their Junior Engineer booklets in time to receive their Junior Ranger badges. Whew. This program is very difficult. Too difficult I would say. The displays around the center and outside were really disjointed and did not give information you needed for the activity books. It was just a slog getting through it. We have done a lot of Junior Ranger programs throughout our road trip, and this is the only one where I might say, "Don't bother!" to!

Know Before You Go: Check the website for program times. There is a reenactment ceremony and also a Whistle Stop program on Saturdays. The Junior Engineer program is hard, but go for it if you looooove trains or are a die-hard Junior Ranger fan like my kids.
